Where to eat and drink in Edinburgh

Edinburgh has many very good restaurants and other eating places. We were pleasantly surprised by the food because we had no problem finding what we wanted to eat. From fish & chips to haggis, even the fried foods were good and didn't give us any problems, even though we don't eat much fried food at home.

The list of my favorite places to eat and drink in Edinburgh is below

One of the best pubs in Edinburgh is Deacon Brodie's tavern. It is pub, named after a famous robber William Brodie. Brodie didn't live in this building, but somewhere nearby. During the day he was a respected citizen, a member of the City Council, but in the night he transformed into the leader of bandits. Finally in 1788 he was caught and punished. The pub was opened in 1806. You can find there some beers and tasty and inexpensive meal like fish and chips.

Earlier the Grassmarket used to be the scene of regular public hangings, but now it is one of Edinburgh's busiest drinking areas. The Last Drop is dark and dimly lit, with wooden beams and brick archways leading to a back room covered in foreign banknotes and posters for local events. It serves good pub food (I recommend the fajitas).

Bow bar is one of Edinburgh's best real ale pubs on Victoria Street for some twenty years. There is a  lots of beers, from Stewart's to Darkstar. There is also a good selection of whiskies and if you want a quick snack the food is reasonable.

I highly recommend to try Innis and Gunn, beer made in whisky casks; Edinbrugh No.3, traditional scottish ale; and Deuchars, an Indian Pale Ale. If you like to experiment, you may ask to mix Guinness with blackberry syrup. It's amazing girly drink -)

The restaurant Mussel and Steak is more refined place, which, as you would expect, serves mussels and steaks in a warm and cozy atmosphere. My favorite way to start a meal is with a kilo pot of their mussels, which are all ridiculously fresh and delicious, particularly with the white wine, shallots, garlic and cream sauce. Both the steaks and the seafood pasta (with loads of mussels, scallops, prawns, and calamari) are excellent main courses, and their fries with 'beef dripping' are some of the best I've ever tasted. Their wine list is not huge but offers good selection at reasonable prices.

In Edinburgh, of course, there are also expensive and truly fashionable restaurants. One of them, Ondine , has high grade, it's top end seafood restaurant. This restaurant left me very good memories. This restaurant has a very modern interior with an airy, elegant feel. Tables nicely prepared, everything clean, the service cares about you as every guest was from a royal family. As for the food and beverage it's not cheap but very delicious. If you want to eat well and get full be prepared to spend around £40 per person.
